Digital overtakes physical

PRS for Music, the organisation which oversees royalty collection for over 65,000 composers and song writers, today announced that online music sales had at last overtaken physical sales (on CD and DVD formats). Online sales were up by 12.8 million to £30.4 million whereas sales on CD and DVD dropped by £8.7 million.

The lift in online sales equals a 73 per cent growth in a market that grew overall by 2.6 per cent. Total revenues rose to £623 million.
